My typical Client

I help clients of all ages at various life stages – from clients that are just starting out that may have landed there first international position with a multinational company to expatriate families that need an international solution to there finances.

My typical client is a working professional between thirty five and forty five years of age working abroad for a multinational organisation, with a young family. He/she is well remunerated and has already worked in several locations throughout the world. They are disciplined with there finances and have high aspirations for there future. They usually want to retire back to there country of origin or that of there partner.

How I work with my clients

The first thing is to ask lots of questions and listen – this doesn’t just give me a detailed understanding of my clients needs but creates a rare opportunity for my clients to take stock and really get to grips of what they want out of life.

Due to busy lives and pressures that many clients face there are certain things that constantly go to the bottom of there list of priorities – usually there financial plans!

Only when I have helped my clients get a clear picture of what they want for there future can I start to research for solutions and make my recommendations.

What sets us apart?

Trafalgar is not associated with any banks, insurance companies of financial institutions and does not provide any of its own products. This puts me in the unique position of being able to choose and research from the global market, compare like for like products, and tailor a solution for my clients.

This is just the beginning; once a client chooses to work with me my priority is to building a long term relationship based on trust, grounded through ongoing reviews and proactive communication.

What kind of work do you do?  Are you an accountant, teacher or possibly a solicitor?  These are all careers which can be continued in different countries.  There will need to be some changes but these are transferable skills which can be adapted to a new country.

The first port of call is to the really helpful consultants at Trafalgar International, who will be able to give excellent advice.  They may even suggest that you would be best served by looking for private work in the short term.

It is always help if you can continue work that you previously did in another country.  If you are able to work on your own, or even, maybe with a little help from a previous employer or client, there will be an income which can be achieved within a short time of moving abroad.

The main thing is not to expect too much of yourself.  Take the time in building up new business relationships and in time things do have a habit of sorting themselves out.  If you push them along too quickly that is when they start to go wrong.

Enjoy working for yourself.  Set yourself goals, but make sure that you can achieve some, if not all of them.  Don’t beat yourself up when something doesn’t quite work as you expect it and if occasionally, you have fallen behind, apologise for the lapse, and carry on.

Everyone is allowed to make mistakes, but it is how you deal with them that makes or breaks your business.  Don’t be arrogant, but certainly don’t go overboard and be subservient. Allow for errors and correct them, and no-one will have a problem.  In that way, your small business which you started only a short time ago will grow from strength to strength.

Those families who are planning to move abroad may be able to ask their UK employer if they can continue working for them.  Depending on the type of work being done, there may be a chance of working part-time in the UK and working part-time from home.

Many companies are quite happy to allow some flexibility and if for instance you are an accountant, or do much of your work online, this may not even cause a problem.

It could be that you travel back to the UK a couple of times each month and spend three or four days in the office at that time.  If you have a colleague or friend whom you can stay with, this can be a really practical arrangement.  Do give the recruitment consultants at Trafalgar International a call and discuss your plans with them as they will be able to give a considerable amount of advice.

Whatever the situation is if you have worked for a company for some time, and they know that you do a good job, there is a reasonable chance that they will want to try and accommodate you if at all possible.  If they can’t sort anything out, they may know another company who can assist you.

Before discussing the position with your existing company, ensure that you research the situation, and give your company as many reasons as possible why they should continue to employ you.

Bear in mind that whatever transpires, for a good employee with excellent skills, there will always be work available.  Don’t panic, speak to as many other companies in a similar business as possible, and hopefully, within a very short time, you’ll have a new job.

When you first move to another country, if you don’t already have a career which has already provided a new job, then you may wonder how to make a living, or at least a contribution towards living expenses.

If you have moved as one half of a couple, and your partner has already secured some work, that will obviously remove some pressure away from needing an immediate income.  Before making any decisions speak with the recruitment guys at Trafalgar International as they will be able to give some good advice.

Some people who are reasonably good with words, may find that they are able to find some writing work by creating content for a website.  There are various companies online and  you can register with them for the type of work which you feel you can do.  You may be good at website design or proofreading – there is a wide choice of skills from which you can select.   The company will send you details of every piece of work which match the details which you have given them.  At that point you decide whether or not you would like to bid for the work.

You won’t earn a fortune by doing this work.  There are many other freelance workers who will also bid, and these are from every country around the world.  If you want to gain some experience, however; this can be a good starting point, and you may find that you obtain regular work from a client.

A good bonus from looking for freelance work is that you can choose when you want to work, so if you decide you are going to have two weeks without any work – just don’t bid for anything.

This may be a useful starting place for anyone wanting to work from home, and there are many different opportunities which can provide an income; however, you do need to actually complete the work in order to be paid!

Although we’d like to sit around doing nothing, and not needing to earn a living, for the vast majority of the population it isn’t going to happen.  Well, not until we are able to retire at some point in the future.

In the meantime, unless heir to a fortune, we all need to earn an income.  In many cases, we feel as if we should be earning more than we actually do.  We all want to think that our efforts are more than we are being paid.  No matter what the situation is, for those who are in work, it is better than the alternative.  Unless desperately unhappy with our lot, in time things will improve.

Whichever country you are presently living in, look for work to enable you to pay the bills.  A good starting point is by contacting the super guys at Trafalgar International and by asking their opinion regarding finding work.

They are the experts and they should be able to point you in the right direction.  Having said that of course you do need to be able to help yourself.  Make a list of the things that you do best, and try to find work related to something that you can already do, perhaps as a hobby.  Look in the local newspapers, and look online for opportunities.  There are always vacancies if you make the effort to look for them, and are prepared to consider most things.

Concentrate on helping yourself, and once you start, it is surprising how quickly something will turn up.  Once you have a job, it is easy to look to improve things, but you need to start on the bottom rung.

You’re sitting on a warm beach in Southern Spain contemplating the best way to remain there for the winter – in Spain, not the beach – well yes, maybe the beach, as well!

You have just had a wonderful time through the main tourist season and working as one of the assistants in the kids clubs in one of the major tour company’s hotels.  What can you do other than go back to the UK?

The first thing to do is ask any of the other seasonal staff whether they too want to stay there because if a group of you are able to plan something together that would be much safer.  Find out whether it is possible to rent an apartment – not on the beach front – that will be too expensive but set further away, which will be considerably cheaper.

Contact the specialist recruitment guys at Trafalgar International and ask them to give you some advice regarding winter work.  They know everything so give them a call straightaway.

The main thing is to ensure that you aren’t short of money.  For the few remaining weeks of the season whilst you are working try to save as much as possible.  Even if four or six of you are going to share the cost of renting an apartment, you need to remember that you will need to pay a deposit, and there will be lots of little expenses which mount up.

You need to have enough money to live on for a few weeks until you can find a job, maybe even in a bar.  Start looking for work now, and let it be known when you are available to begin a new job.  It is surprising how many people know someone who is looking for a new member of staff who is just like you.

Remember, if it doesn’t work out – you’ve tried it, and you can always go home.

Many people who decide to move to France either buy a property to renovate, or purchase one already modernised, with a gite to rent out to holidaymakers.  This is a really good way to derive an income from property.  Other people even, if there is a larger group wanting to rent, move out of the main house and into the gite themselves.

Whichever way you want to proceed, this is a wonderful way to earn an income from your own property.  If you possess some marketable skills, such as cooking or you are an artist and you are able to teach courses – this is obviously a way to earn an additional income.

Even if you only rent the property out for six months of the year, the revenue will probably be sufficient to make life considerably easier.   As there are many properties with outbuildings in the gardens, there may be a chance to renovate additional accommodation.

Whatever you do make sure that you take advice from the recruitment consultants at Trafalgar International.  They will be able to assist you and if you feel that you want to discuss any legal matters regarding renting out a gite, or two, then they will know all of the answers.

If you decide to renovate another building on your land, ensure that you have any necessary permissions before commencing the work.  Should you need to recruit builders or any other tradespeople, ensure that you have fixed a price with them before they start the work, and very importantly, agree a date when the work is due to be completed, and insert a penalty clause if it isn’t finished on time.  As long as you take care and confirm everything in writing, there should be any problems.

If you plan on looking for work in Spain, where do you start?  There are some employment agencies in Spain but they may charge a fee.  Many newspapers advertise vacancies, but the majority of them are advertised on a Sunday.  There are even television channels which advertise vacancies and give some details but the majority of companies advertise their vacancies on their own websites.

That’s fine in theory, but if you don’t know a company name it’s not going to be very easy to obtain the information required.  It is all a little bit “hit and miss” and in the short term the local Sunday paper may be the best starting point.

Many companies who are looking for staff only recruit those people who are able to speak Spanish.  Unless you know companies who are based in the UK but have an office in Spain there may be considerable difficulty in obtaining a permanent placement.

The easiest way to find employment may be to start with bar work and as you start to recognise the local Spanish people and have conversations with them, this may be an opportunity to find a permanent job.   It will be almost essential to have some knowledge of the language and it is well worth taking time to learn the basics before going to the country.  This will help considerably and show that you are willing to learn and which is something an employer will want to know about a potential employee.

When you do go to Spain, ensure that you have sufficient money to tide you over for a few weeks, and always keep some emergency funds in case you decide that you want to return to the UK.

Looking for employment in a new country particularly for those with little knowledge of the language will always prove difficult.  Before travelling ensure that some basic words are known and always have a phrase book ready for emergencies.  Trying to find work will be impossible unless it is bars where the owners are from the UK.  Do take advice from the recruitment consultants at Trafalgar International as they will know the job market and the likelihood of finding some kind of work.

Currently there do appear to be a considerable numbers of vacancies; however many of these are computer related, so for those people with a good knowledge of computing it shouldn’t be too difficult to find employment.  Those who are not computer literate – well, they can find their way around a computer, but don’t know the technicalities – may find it a little more demanding when trying to find a job.

There are vacancies which are posted on various websites which are obviously really good starting points.  If you have specialist skills and qualifications, it should be relatively easy to contact all companies who employ staff with similar qualifications.  It is important to be pro-active, and not to sit down and wait for the work to find you.  Make the effort – if you see work being advertised on a website and it doesn’t quite match your qualifications and experience – contact the company and ask whether they have any other positions available.  It could be that there is another vacancy which they weren’t going to advertise until they had filled the position being advertised.

Be prepared to accept a lower salary than you were receiving in the UK.  Salaries are lower in Spain but the cost of living is also lower.  Prepare to negotiate if you find a position is offered to you.  It is better to be working, even with a reduced salary, than not having any salary at all.  Once you have proved yourself at a company then may be the time to ask for an increase in pay.

For those people who live in Spain and are looking to find employment they may find some difficulty if they’re not able to speak some Spanish.  If you came to live in the UK and you couldn’t speak any English, you would find it difficult to find work that is legal, and it’s the same for those ex-pats wanting to work in Spain.

For those with very little knowledge of the language they would be best working for a UK-based company with offices in Spain.  There is often a fair amount of work within the tourist regions, but it is usually bar work or similar.

Contact the experienced recruitment consultants at Trafalgar international and listen to their advice.   As they know many companies they will be able to give you an honest opinion as to the likelihood of finding employment.

Another alternative method of securing an income is by purchasing an established business.  The downside could be that unless the current owners are retiring, they may just be selling because the business is losing money.  Many businesses that are for sale in Spain are tourist related, i.e. house for the owners together with several holiday cottages.  This is a good ready-made business; however the competition may mean that the rental income might be low. In that case look for an angle – offering courses, or horse riding and gear it to the British market who will know that you obviously speak English.  Although this will probably be expensive to buy, for those with the funds available the income which can be generated year-round with new and repeat business can be high.  It is obviously vital to have all the figures looked at by qualified accountants and all the deeds to the properties will need scrutinising before completion by a competent lawyer.

Don’t rush into anything – genuine sellers will wait for you until your enquiries are complete. If they won’t perhaps you have had a lucky escape!
